Best Time to Visit Zanzibar (2026): A Month-by-Month Guide
By Ô Talia Hotel & Spa — Your home in the heart of Nungwi
Zanzibar is one of those destinations that works almost any time of year — warm water, white sand, and Indian Ocean sunsets are not seasonal events here. But “almost any time” is not the same as “every time,” and if you’ve invested in a flight to this corner of East Africa, you deserve to know exactly what you’re arriving into.
The truth is that when you visit Zanzibar shapes everything: how the beach looks and feels, whether the ocean is calm enough to snorkel, how many other travellers you’ll share it with, and how much you’ll pay for the privilege. Two weeks in the wrong month won’t ruin a trip to Zanzibar — but two weeks in the right one can make it the holiday you talk about for years.
This guide breaks the Best Time to Visit Zanzibar down month by month so you can match your travel style to the right season, whether you’re chasing perfect diving conditions, a quiet honeymoon, a budget escape, or a post-safari beach reward.

Understanding Zanzibar’s Seasons
Zanzibar sits just six degrees south of the equator, which means it is warm year-round — the ocean never drops below 25°C and daytime temperatures rarely fall below 24°C even in the coolest months. What changes with the seasons is not temperature so much as rainfall, humidity, wind, and sea conditions.
The island’s calendar is shaped by two monsoon systems and divides into four broad periods:
Long Dry Season — June to October
Monthly rainfall averages just 35 to 53mm during these months, skies are reliably clear, and daytime temperatures sit around 28 to 30°C. Humidity drops to its lowest point of the year. This is widely regarded as the best time to visit Zanzibar, and it shows — the island is at its most popular. June marks the beginning of optimal diving conditions in the Zanzibar Channel, with visibility improving to 25–40 metres as strong currents bring nutrient-rich water attracting hammerhead sharks, manta rays, and large schools of fish.
Short Dry Season — December to February
The hot dry season offers consistently sunny weather with temperatures often exceeding 30°C. While humidity can be slightly higher than in the cool dry season, this period is ideal for beach holidays, romantic getaways, and sun-soaked adventures. It is less crowded than June–October and, in many respects, equally beautiful.
Long Rains — March to May
The main rainy season typically brings afternoon tropical downpours, high humidity, and daily temperatures reaching the low-to-mid 30s. April and May are the wettest months. Many smaller properties close during this window, and beach conditions are at their least predictable. That said, it is the best time of year for budget travellers — rates drop significantly and the island is serene and uncrowded.
Short Rains — November
November starts the short rainy season, but unlike the long rains, showers are lighter and often come in short bursts, mostly in the early mornings or evenings. By mid-December, the island gears up for holiday festivities and fills with year-end travellers.
Month-by-Month Breakdown
January ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Weather: 24–31°C · Minimal rainfall (~50mm) · Calm seas · High season
January opens Zanzibar’s short dry season and is one of the best months to visit. The ocean is warm at around 27°C and calm, perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and dhow cruises. January coincides with optimal diving conditions in the Zanzibar Channel, with excellent visibility and whale sharks frequently spotted off the north coast around Mnemba Atoll.
Crowds are lower than peak season (June–August), and prices, while still high season, are more manageable than July or August. An excellent month for couples, honeymooners, and divers. Book accommodation at Ô Talia in advance — we fill up fast in January.
Best for: Diving, honeymoons, beach relaxation, post-Christmas escape
February ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Weather: 25–32°C · 18mm rainfall (driest month of the year) · Calm seas · High season
February is the driest, sunniest month in Zanzibar. With just 18mm of rainfall on average, the air is clear, beaches are immaculate, and the ocean is the kind of blue you’ll remember for years. Water temperatures peak at 28–29°C — warm enough for hours of swimming without a wetsuit.
If you are visiting Zanzibar for the first time and want to guarantee the best possible beach conditions, February is your answer. It is also excellent for photography — the light is extraordinary and the skies are consistently clear.
Best for: First-time visitors, families, beach photography, swimming, snorkelling
March 🌤️☀️🌦️
Weather: 26–33°C · Increasing humidity · Rains begin mid-month · Shoulder season
March starts well — warm, sunny, and still relatively calm at the beach. Fantastic diving conditions continue through February and March, offering clear conditions in and around coral reefs and lagoons. These are among the best months for diving, particularly along the south coast.
From mid-March onwards, the first rains typically arrive as afternoon thundershowers. They rarely last all day and often clear by evening, but humidity builds noticeably. Prices begin to dip and crowds thin out. A good option for divers or travellers who don’t mind variable weather in exchange for lower prices and quieter beaches.
Best for: Diving, budget-conscious travellers, uncrowded beaches
April 🌧️🌧️🌧️
Weather: 27–34°C · Heavy rainfall · High humidity · Low season
April is Zanzibar’s wettest month. Afternoon tropical downpours are the norm — which can be heavy on any of the islands. Humidity is high and daily temperatures reach the low-to-mid 30s. Beach holidays during this month require flexibility and a genuine appetite for the island’s quieter, more elemental character.
The upside: hotel rates drop to their lowest point of the year — sometimes by 40–50%. Ô Talia remains open year-round, meaning you can experience Nungwi’s beauty, the spa, and Moroccan-Swahili cuisine at genuinely exceptional value. The village slows down, the beach empties, and Zanzibar reveals a different, greener, more honest face.
Best for: Budget travellers, writers, solo retreats, spa-focused stays, long-term visitors
May 🌧️🌤️
Weather: 26–33°C · Rain easing toward month’s end · Low season
May mirrors April in its first half, then gradually clears toward the end of the month as the long rains wind down. Some resorts may close during this time due to the rains, while those that remain open frequently offer tantalisingly good rates. Ô Talia stays open throughout — and late May can offer genuinely beautiful days as the weather transitions, with the island lushly green and almost entirely yours.
Best for: Budget stays, couples seeking privacy, photography, shoulder-season value
June ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Weather: 23–29°C · Dry · Lower humidity · Comfortable evenings · Peak season begins
June opens Zanzibar’s peak season. The long rains have ended, the weather is reliably dry, and the island transitions rapidly from green to golden. Temperatures are warm but not extreme, and humidity is comfortable for the first time since February.
This period also coincides with Tanzania’s safari high season, which matters if you’re planning a combined trip. Nungwi fills up with post-safari travellers extending their East Africa adventures with a week on the beach — and for good reason. June is an outstanding month to visit.
Book early. We are typically close to full at Ô Talia by early June.
Best for: Beach holidays, post-safari extensions, diving, all-round ideal conditions
July ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Weather: 23–28°C · Reliably dry · Trade winds · Peak season
July is peak season in Zanzibar and arguably the single most popular month on the island. Zanzibar boasts ideal weather conditions during this period. Clove harvests and spice plantation tours are at their most interesting between July and September.
The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) takes place in July, drawing performers and filmmakers from across the continent to Stone Town’s Old Fort — worth building a trip around if culture matters to you.
The trade winds keep the heat manageable and dhow sailing conditions excellent. The downside is crowds — Nungwi’s beach is busiest this month, and accommodation across the island books out far in advance. Reserve your room at Ô Talia months ahead if July is your target.
Best for: Beach, diving, spice tours, ZIFF festival, safari combinations
August ☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️
Weather: 24–29°C · Dry · Breezy · Peak season
August is the other peak month, with conditions near-identical to July. June to October is for golden light and honeymoon swims. If you want the weather without the crowds, aim for September or early October. That said, August on Nungwi Beach is genuinely spectacular — the light is extraordinary and the Indian Ocean at its most postcard-perfect.
Prices are at their highest of the year across most properties. Ô Talia’s restaurant operates at full capacity, and our spa books up quickly — pre-book treatments when you reserve your room.
Best for: Beach holidays, post-safari, families, diving, spice tours
September ☀️☀️☀️☀️
Weather: 24–30°C · Dry · Slightly warmer · Shoulder of peak season
September and early October offer the perfect balance of dry weather and thinner crowds for a more intimate experience. The long dry season is still fully in effect, but European school holidays have ended and visitor numbers drop noticeably from August’s peak. Prices ease slightly and the beach at Nungwi feels more spacious.
Diving remains excellent — visibility is at or near its best of the year. September is one of our favourite months at Ô Talia, and often recommended to guests who ask which month gives the best combination of everything.
Best for: Couples, honeymooners, divers, anyone wanting peak conditions with fewer people
October ☀️☀️☀️🌤️
Weather: 25–31°C · Mostly dry · Ocean warming · Transition month
October is still largely dry, with conditions remaining excellent for swimming and beach activities. Zanzibar experiences cooler winds, calm seas, and clear skies in October. Ocean temperatures increase and evenings gradually become warmer as November’s short rains approach.
A great month for last-minute bookings, as occupancy drops from September’s already-lower peak. Prices offer good value relative to the quality of conditions. Ô Talia typically has availability through October.
Best for: Value-seeking travellers, late-season beach holidays, diving, spice tours
November 🌤️🌦️
Weather: 26–32°C · Short rains begin · Mostly sunny mornings · Shoulder season
November starts the short rainy season, but unlike the long rains, showers are lighter and often come in short bursts, mostly in the early mornings or evenings. Most days still offer extended periods of sunshine, and beach time remains very much possible. November is a good option for budget-conscious travellers who want to avoid peak-season crowds.
The island is quieter and more relaxed, and Ô Talia’s restaurant comes into its own for unhurried dinners with the Moroccan-Swahili menu at its fullest.
Best for: Budget travel, shoulder-season value, diving (visibility remains good), quiet beach time
December ☀️🌤️☀️☀️
Weather: 27–33°C · Drier by mid-month · Festive atmosphere · High season
There is more chance of sunshine toward Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Early December can bring lingering short rains, but conditions typically clear from around the 10th onward as the island gears up for its festive high season. By Christmas, Nungwi is lively, warm, and buzzing with energy.
By mid-December, the island gears up for holiday festivities and fills with year-end travellers. Sunset dhow cruises, New Year’s Eve beach dinners, and the particular magic of the Indian Ocean at the end of the year make December special. Book Ô Talia well in advance for the Christmas–New Year window — it is our most heavily booked period of the year.
Best for: Christmas holidays, New Year’s Eve, festive atmosphere, beach and spa
Best Time to Visit by Travel Style
Best for Diving and Snorkelling
Divers and snorkellers should target September through March for the calmest seas and best visibility. January and February offer excellent conditions on the north coast, with Mnemba Atoll at its clearest. June through October brings the best channel diving, with larger pelagic species present.
Top months: January, February, July, August, September
Best for Honeymoons and Couples
June to October offers predictable weather and calm waters, perfect for stress-free honeymoons. January and February are hot, sunny, and great for beach photography or sunset dhow cruises. September in particular offers the right balance of excellent conditions and fewer crowds — more privacy on the beach, easier restaurant reservations, and a calmer atmosphere at the spa.
Top months: January, February, September, October
Best for Families
February is the top recommendation for families and anyone prioritising weather above all else. July and August work well for families tied to school holidays despite the crowds. The calm, tide-free beach at Nungwi makes it suitable for children year-round in the dry season.
Top months: February, July, August
Best for Budget Travellers
The best time to visit Zanzibar on a budget is during the low tourist season from March to May, when resorts offer their lowest rates. Late May and November also offer good value without the full-on rain of the low season core.
Top months: April, May, November
Best for Avoiding Crowds
January 2026 alone brought over 100,000 visitors to Zanzibar. The days of having beaches to yourself in August are mostly gone at popular spots. Shoulder season offers a better balance of weather and space.
Top months: September, October, early November, January (compared to July/August)
Best for Culture and Festivals
The Zanzibar International Film Festival (ZIFF) takes place in July at the Old Fort in Stone Town, drawing performers from across the continent — worth building a trip around if live music and film matter to you. The Sauti za Busara music festival takes place in February, Zanzibar’s driest month — an extraordinary combination of culture and perfect beach weather.
Top months: February (Sauti za Busara), July (ZIFF)
What About Nungwi Specifically?
One important factor that most general Zanzibar guides overlook: Nungwi’s position on the north coast gives it slightly different characteristics to the rest of the island.
Because Nungwi faces west and sits at the northern tip, it receives the benefit of the trade winds that make June–October so pleasant, while being somewhat less affected by the heavy rains that can drench the east coast. The beach at Nungwi drains well and the village infrastructure continues to function through all but the most intense rainfall.
More importantly, Nungwi’s tide-independent beach means it is swimmable year-round — even in the short rains of November, when the east coast beaches can be choppy and the tidal flats exposed. When you stay at Ô Talia Hotel & Spa, you have direct access to a beach that delivers regardless of the month you arrive.
Our 24-hour front desk, full-service restaurant (open 7:00 AM–11:00 PM year-round), spa treatments inspired by Swahili traditions, and concierge service for excursions and day trips make Ô Talia an ideal base in any season — from the lively peak of July to the tranquil green quiet of May.

Combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania Safari
Many of Ô Talia’s guests arrive after a Tanzania safari — the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, or Tarangire — and spend their final days unwinding on Nungwi Beach before flying home. It is one of the most satisfying ways to experience East Africa, and the logistics are straightforward: Zanzibar International Airport is a 30-minute flight from Kilimanjaro International Airport, with multiple daily connections.
For travellers combining Zanzibar with a Tanzania safari, June through October gives you the best overlap between island weather and mainland wildlife viewing. This window covers the peak of the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Serengeti and coincides with Zanzibar’s finest beach conditions. A typical itinerary runs 7–10 days on safari followed by 5–7 nights at Ô Talia in Nungwi — perfectly paced, with the beach arrival feeling like the reward it should be.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best month to visit Zanzibar?
The best time to visit Zanzibar is during the dry season from June to October, when rainfall drops below 53mm per month, skies stay clear, and beach conditions are near perfect. Of these months, September and October offer the best conditions with noticeably fewer crowds. February is the driest single month of the year and an excellent alternative for those who cannot travel in the middle of the year.
Is Zanzibar good in December?
Yes — particularly from mid-December onward, when the short rains typically clear and the island enters festive season. By mid-December, the island gears up for holiday festivities and fills with year-end travellers. Expect higher prices and a lively, celebratory atmosphere. Book well in advance for Christmas and New Year.
Is it worth going to Zanzibar in the rainy season?
It depends on your priorities. The long rains from March to May bring heavy downpours but also silence, lush greenery, and the best hotel rates of the year. If your primary goal is a sunny beach holiday, avoid April and May. If you value solitude, lower prices, and don’t mind the occasional heavy shower, it can be deeply rewarding.
What is the weather like in Zanzibar in January?
January is part of the short dry season and one of the finest months to visit. Temperatures sit at 24–31°C, humidity is manageable, and rainfall is minimal. The ocean is warm at around 27°C and calm — perfect for swimming, snorkelling, and dhow cruises.
What is the cheapest time to visit Zanzibar?
April and May are the months when resorts offer their lowest rates, as weather conditions on the island are at their poorest. Some resorts may close during this time due to the rains. Late May and November also offer meaningful discounts with better weather conditions.
Does it rain every day in Zanzibar’s rainy season?
No. Even during the rainy season, it rarely rains all day. Rainfall most commonly arrives as afternoon or evening downpours that clear within a few hours. Mornings are often sunny. That said, the long rains of April–May can bring several consecutive grey days and are genuinely disruptive to beach holidays.
Is Zanzibar good for New Year’s?
Yes — late December through New Year is a festive and beautiful time to visit. The short rains have typically cleared, temperatures are warm, and the island has a celebratory energy. Prices are at their highest of the short dry season; book Ô Talia as early as possible for the New Year period.
Our Honest Recommendation
If you can travel in September or October, do. The dry season is still fully in effect, the beach and ocean are superb, the crowds have thinned from August’s peak, prices ease, and the atmosphere at Nungwi is relaxed and unhurried. It is our favourite window at Ô Talia.
If school holidays or work schedules push you toward July or August, come anyway — the conditions are exceptional, just busier. If January or February is what you can do, you will arrive in arguably Zanzibar’s most beautiful month and find a calmer island than the peak summer period.
Whatever month you choose, Nungwi’s tide-free beach, the Indian Ocean sunset, and the warmth of Swahili hospitality remain constant.
Ready to plan your stay? At Ô Talia Hotel & Spa, our concierge team can help you build the perfect itinerary around your travel dates — spa treatments, snorkelling excursions, spice tours, airport transfers, and everything in between.
